Releasing in Japan on August 1, 2025, Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia will be the dual first main expansion sets from the new Pokémon TCG: MEGA era. They will be the Japanese counterpart of the upcoming English set, Mega Evolution, releasing September 26, 2025.

We have officially left the days of Scarlet & Violet behind and are entering a new era -- MEGA! This new era parallels the upcoming console release of Legends: Z-A and the reintroduction of Mega evolutions.

While fans are excited that Megas are back, TCG players should note that there'll be a slight change in the Mega evolution TCG mechanic from how it worked in XY. Instead of Megas evolving from the fully evolved Basic ex card (eg. Mega Venusaur ex evolving from Basic Venusaur ex), they now evolve from the last pre-evolution stage (eg. Mega Venusaur ex now evolves from Stage 2 Ivysaur). Additionally, instead of the player’s turn ending after the evolution, Megas will award three Prize Cards instead of two when they are knocked out.

Art collectors should also be happy (though maybe wallets less so) to hear that MEGA will still have Art Rare/Illustration Rare cards! There were some murmurings at one point that Scarlet & Violet was the end of the line for illustration cards or that they might exist in some other capacity. However, based on the SARs and ARs that have been revealed so far, it seems like there’s no significant change.

The full card lists for Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia aren't available yet, but here are the Secret Rares that have been revealed so far. For English collectors, note that the Alakazam AR will be the promo card for the Mega Evolution ETB - Mega Gardevoir variant and the Riolu AR will be the promo card for the Mega Evolution ETB - Mega Lucario variant.

We'll continue to update as more cards come out!

The Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, and Mega Venusaur in this set also make a single connected art set together!

And here's a comparison between the XY era Mega evolution cards and the ones from the upcoming MEGA sets.
